Abstract
Field and Aims: The primary concern of any society is to reduce social deviance. Juvenile delinquency is a function of the emergence of social deviance within a community. In schools, the majority of time is spent in close proximity to peers of similar age groups with shared interests and preferences, with these connections often extending beyond school hours. Undoubtedly, one of the main factors influencing education and shaping social behaviors suited to an ideal citizen is the hidden curriculum. This study explores the impact of the hidden curriculum in preventing students from delinquency.
Method: This research employed an exploratory mixed-method approach. In terms of orientation, it was foundational, and regarding its timeline, it followed a sequential approach with greater emphasis on qualitative methods. In the qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews with knowledgeable experts were conducted using theoretical, opportunistic, and focused sampling techniques. For the quantitative phase, multi-stage cluster sampling was initially employed, followed by a census to ensure sample adequacy. In the first quantitative stage, model validation was conducted on a sample of 384 secondary school teachers in Alborz province using Smart PLS3 software. In the second stage, the existing state was assessed using a one-sample t-test with SPSS24 software.
Findings and Conclusions: In the open coding stage, 117 indicators were identified, which were then categorized into 57 indicators and 6 dimensions during axial coding. Ultimately, quantitative analysis confirmed 52 indicators across 6 dimensions. The final six dimensions identified as effective in reducing students' inclination toward delinquency within the hidden curriculum were: school physical structure, school environment, interactions among school stakeholders, teacher behaviors, student-teacher relationships, and IT literacy. Upon evaluating the existing situation, the null hypothesis was rejected, and from teachers' perspectives, all identified dimensions were found to influence the reduction or increase in delinquency tendency among students.
