Field and Aims: Criminology is a natural human response to violence and a means of self-defense against it, with a long historical background. Among contemporary approaches, in contrast to situational and punitive perspectives, the developmental crime prevention approach seeks to reduce various harms through developmental strategies. Criminology covers a wide range of areas, one of which is literary criminology, formed at the intersection of criminology and literature. In this field, literary works are analyzed in terms of their compatibility with scientific criminological concepts. Adapting literary content from this perspective can expand criminological studies and contribute to their localization and enrichment. One of the significant literary works suitable for such analysis is the Qaboos Nameh, authored by Unsur al-Ma ‘ali Kaykavus ibn Iskandar ibn Qaboos ibn Voshmgir ibn Ziyar in the fifth century AH.
Method: Using a documentary method and an analytical approach, this research addresses the question of which concepts in this work align with criminological theories and approaches.
Findings and Conclusions: The Qabusnameh is regarded as a compendium of Iranian culture and civilization from the pre-Islamic and pre-Mongol periods. In addition to moral and religious advice, it provides detailed teachings on various life skills. Its recommendations on piety, the pursuit of knowledge, the acquisition of skills, the prevention of poverty, family formation, and the understanding of human nature and needs are particularly noteworthy. This article examines ʿUnsur al-Maʿali’s views on the consequences of unsafe caregiving patterns, the nature of crime, the role of rationality and its cultivation in developmental prevention, the social reaction and labeling theory, and the impact of poverty and wealth on criminal behavior.
