Field and Aims: In general, crime is a complex social phenomenon influenced by numerous and diverse factors, and thus it cannot be approached from a one-dimensional perspective. Criminological challenges become more significant when criminal behaviors emerge as a result of a prolonged process and occur explosively, leaving no room for the offender to reflect rationally on their actions. Crimes of this nature do exist, more or less, within the criminal justice process and occupy part of its management capacities. However, for better judgment regarding such phenomena, turning to real-life narratives can significantly expose us to the realities of society—especially when the under-study subject is, in some way, a victim of discrimination and injustice. This perspective is thoroughly and accurately explored within critical criminological thought.
The narrative analyzed in this article is based on a true story depicted in the non-fiction novel «The Years of the Grave», written by Alireza Rahimi Nejad. It highlights the extent to which society aligns with the subject of the book (though not necessarily with the criminal act itself).
Method: This article is written using content analysis with a descriptive and analytical approach, adopting a critical and postmodern lens toward social phenomena. It attempts, as much as possible, to reflect the underlying emotions embedded in the narrative.
Findings and Conclusions: It is now widely accepted that society must acknowledge its role in criminal events. However, the key question is how this responsibility is assumed and how society responds to it. Within the critical approach to crime, the process of holding society accountable must be coercive, expressed through harsh and critical language. Otherwise, there is no real opportunity to highlight society’s responsibility. This study, in alignment with the narrative’s progression, seeks to portray the issue as a consequence rooted in the injustice and discrimination present within society.
